Torus sparks Michael’s career

February 15th 2019

Thanks to Helena, part of northwest housing group, Torus, Michael got a full-time job in the career he wanted.

Michael McCormick from St Helens had always wanted a career in the trades and had initially started training as a plumber but struggled to gain work experience and ended up working in plumbing and electrical merchants.   But he was still determined to develop his career in the trades.

In 2015, Helena customer Michael received support from the Helena Employment team and secured a four-year Electrical apprenticeship, with Widnes based firm AB Building & Electrical.

Michael, 28 is now a fully qualified Electrician, he said; “I cannot thank Helena enough, they gave me the support to get the careers I wanted.  I love working at AB, I have made some great friends and I have now managed to buy my own home.”

Cath Brooks, Torus Employment Advisor, said; “Helena understands the pressure our customers are under with issues around benefits, lack of skills and changes in the jobs market.  We have always been keen to support our customers into employment or help them to improve their skills and progress into a job or career they want.”

Andy Knowles, Contracts Manager of AB, said; “Apprenticeships are so important to our business and our partnership with Torus allows us to help people from our local communities, to recruit local people who then become valuable members of the team.”
