Marking Mary’s milestone birthday with flowers, cake, and ukuleles
17 June 2025
We have had the pleasure of celebrating one of our lovely Liverpool sheltered scheme residents turning 100 (yes, 100!).
The party spread included cake, and sausage rolls. Which was just as well, as when we asked Mary about her secret to reaching her milestone age, she told us that it was down to good living, plenty of exercise and good food.
Making a surprise visit to join the joviality with Mary’s family and friends was Catherine Murray-Howard, Torus Chief Operating Officer to present Mary with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
Catherine said:
“It is such a special honour to share Mary’s 100th birthday celebrations. On behalf of everyone at Torus, I would like to wish Mary a very happy birthday.”
Mary has enjoyed calling Shallcross Court her home for just over 35 years. She moved she moved there, from nearby Shakespeare Close in 1990. From the age of 17, Mary worked in Vauxhall making cigarettes at The British American Tobacco (BAT).
Jayne Bentley, Sheltered Scheme Manager told us that Mary in the past loved calling bingo twice a week, and shopping for other people at the scheme. For Mary’s birthday she could not resist booking a ukulele band. The strum of ukeleles played lots of Mary’s favourite tunes.
Jayne said:
“Mary was absolutely thrilled to receive her birthday card from King Charles.”
Mary, we hope you enjoyed your special day and a happy 100th birthday from all of us at Torus.
