Using technology to tackle anti-social behaviour – the Noise App

In 2020, Torus received over 800 complaints from customers complaining about nuisance noise coming from their neighbours. To help us help more customers and resolve cases quicker, Torus are now using ‘The Noise App’.

The Noise App allows people to record audio for up to 30 seconds at a time on their Smartphone. This recording, along with any additional information about the disturbance, is then sent instantly to the Torus Safer Estates and Neighbourhood Teams for review and could be used to support a complaint.

Torus Service Lead Safer Estates, David Prew, said;

“The Noise App allows us to efficiently manage noise nuisance cases, without the need for an officer to visit a customer’s home to install noise monitoring equipment which is especially important as we seek to help reduce the spread of Covid-19.

“The customer can easily submit recordings from their phones, which the investigating officer can then review from their desktop, allowing them to quickly determine what course of action is required.

“The time saved by not driving to and from customer’s homes to install and remove equipment will allow staff to manage their workloads more efficiently.

“With over 800 noise nuisance complaints in just one year, the App will not only enable us to take decisive action against those who negatively impact on the quality of life of others, but will also help us to determine any reports that do not constitute as noise nuisance, especially those types of cases that in the past have taken up far too much time and resource.”

Dealing with ASB is not a simple task and Torus takes all reports of ASB and noise nuisance very seriously .  It is one of Torus’s key priorities to ensure that our communities are safe and a place where people want to live.
