Harpers Green Extra Care scheme in Warrington welcomed its first residents in December 2020 – amongst them is Dennis McGhee who is now benefitting from the security of 24/7 support and additional independence.
Dennis, 80, originally from Ireland, became the first resident when he moved into his ground floor apartment on the 5 December with the help of Torus Support Network.
Widower, Dennis was the last person to moved out of Torus Broomfield’s scheme in Appleton, which he had called home for the last three years. Despite regular investment over the years, Broomfield’s, which was built in 1963, failed to meet the standards expected of a modern Extra Care facility, particularly for those with high care needs or restricted mobility and closed in 2019.
In its place, Harpers Green, a new £11m purpose-built extra care facility is offering over 55s in Warrington, and former Broomfield’s residents like Dennis, an independent lifestyle, a modern, affordable home together with the added reassurance that care and support is available on-site for those who need it now and for those who may develop a need for it over time.
Enjoying a prime location in leafy Padgate, close to Warrington town centre, Harpers Green offers residents the latest facilities including a spacious communal lounge, hair and beauty salon and bistro facility. There’s even a carefully restored bowling green.
Here 97 sensitively designed one- and two-bedroom apartments available for affordable rent or sale through shared ownership, create individual homes as part of a wider community where older people can lead sociable, fulfilling and independent lives.
Dennis, who has settled in well to Harpers Green, said;
“It was very exciting to be the first person to move in, I felt very special. Everyone is friendly and I love all the staff and the carers.
“It’s also lovely having my family close-by as well, my daughter does my food shopping and she is happy that I am here.
“I am so happy here, I love my new apartment, especially the shower. I enjoy going for a walk around saying hello to my new friends and watching the birds and squirrels out of my window.
“I would not want to live anywhere else and when everything gets back to normal, I am looking forward to getting out on the bowling green and going for my dinner in the bistro.”

Care at Harpers Green has been funded and commissioned by Warrington Borough Council and is provided by national charity and Warrington-based Making Space. Day-to-day tenancy support, including help with benefits, managing money, accessing additional care, as well as health & wellbeing activities to reduce isolation, will also be offered by the housing team from Torus Support Network and Torus Foundation.
Despite the challenge of building and moving people during the pandemic Torus, and its partners, are committed to improving care provision for local people.
