Investing in and regenerating much-loved local landmarks is something Torus is passionate about and its latest completion sees the team celebrate a new future for the former Allerton Fire and Police Station – a building now internationally renowned thanks to The Beatles song, Penny Lane.

The newly christened Station Mews represents an £8 million investment from Torus – of which £1.7 million was grant funded by Homes England through a bid via JV North. Torus has now transformed the formerly defunct site to create a modern, energy efficient development in the heart of Allerton, bringing a unique scheme to an area where affordable homes are in short supply.

With the scheme benefitting from the award-winning skills of Torus’ contracting arm – HMS – Allerton is the second large-scale refurbishment Torus and HMS has undertaken in a bid to add a new lease of life to an iconic local landmark that time had forgotten. Following on from the success of its redevelopment of the former Ogden’s Tobacco Factory in Everton, Station Mews has already had a lot of interest from local people looking to get on the property ladder and set up home in a thriving community.

The team are thrilled that Station Mews has been so successful in retaining key features of the former Fire and Police Stations all while creating something that is needed in the area – new, affordable homes for Shared Ownership.

“It’s great to see the transformation of Allerton Police Station into Station Mews.

“Allerton was a beautiful old building in a prime location, but it was no longer fit for purpose for policing and by putting it up for sale we were able to generate much-needed funding for Merseyside Police and reduce our yearly running costs – money which went straight into frontline policing.

“Social value is a core principle of our Estate Strategy, so it’s particularly pleasing the site has been used for affordable housing. We know this is in short supply in Liverpool, so I’m proud that this local landmark which served our officers and staff for around 80 years, will now be put to good use helping people to get on the property ladder and adding to what is already a thriving community.”
